02/08/2002 Entry: "pawnshops"

When I was nineteen years old I went with a friend to look at guitars in a pawnshop on the south side of San Antonio. I'd always thought that pawnshops were kind of sleazy and this experience confirmed it. While my friend was looking at the guitars an elderly Mexican couple came in. The lady was crying and the man had a sad, determined look on his face. I don't speak Spanish, but the clerk filled me in later. (I'm nosy and it disturbs me to see people cry, especially when they're old and helpless looking.) The couple were dirt poor and needed money very badly. The man decided that they had to sell an old ring that had been in the family for generations. The woman didn't want to part with the heirloom. It obviously meant a lot more to her than money. She kept clutching at the man and wailing. The man pawned the ring and led his sobbing wife away. It broke my heart. This is why I never buy jewelry from a pawn shop. For me it's just bad, bad karma. Sure, some people pawn stuff for legitimate reasons. But many things that end up in those places are stolen or pawned out of sheer desperation. How could I wear a piece of jewelry that had an unknown background?

Go ahead and mock. I don't care.

I'm with you two, breaks my heart to see such a scene. although where i'm from they're usually crying over pawning their guns rather than jewelry.

I understand the karma thing and i agree with you however the reason I'm on this site is to find a Pawn shop near my house so that i can make a few bucks getting ride of some junk that Someone who can't afford to bye a sterio or new cds can get them for a discount. And thats good karma Thanks

Gawd am I stupid! You know I have never given one thought to how the pawned items came to be. I just figured I was getting a great deal. No wonder my marriage didn't work! The funniest thing about this is that I stumbled on this site searching for some items of mine that may have been pawned by some unscrupelled, dasterdly neanderthal. One of these items may have been my wedding ring that I so smartly bought from a pawn shop! Interesting.............

I think U are off base. I run a pawnshop and much of are jewelry comes from people who are trading nit in to upgrade to a big or better item,i.e; 1/4 karat for 3/4 karat. We strive to be clean and oper place that is part of the community.

My wife runs a pawn shop and she deals with this stuff alot. They are there to loan you money so you can get out of a jam but you can get the item back when you pay your loan off. Yes it is cheaper than a retail store to buy things and most of the jewelry in the shop are from a retail store which is marked up by 800% of value. You can buy top notch stuff at a pawn shop that does not carry junk. So go shopping at look what you will find.

I also live in san antonio, Texas. I used to go to Providence Highschool in Downtown S.A. Now I'm currently attending Thomas Jefferson High. I live on the West-South Side and I do aggree with you Jewlery/Pawnshop comment. My mom bought this ring from the pawnshop on fredricksberg and I asked her, "mom, you know were tight on money, why did you buy that ring?!" She said, "it's probably worth a furtune, i mean, look at how old it looks!" I didn't mean to be mean or anything but I told her it looked like they robbed it from a grave. So a week later, she got it apprased and it was made in 1980, totally fake, and worth $60. She lost $40 buying that piece of crap.

So, whatever you do DO Not buy sh*t from a pawnshop. they'll wind-up screwing you up in the long-run.
